The Modern Industrial Strategy focuses on life sciences and seven other growth strategies including digital and technologies, five of which have been published.

Key elements for life sciences, ahead of the LSS’ publication, include six headline actions:

Setting up the HDRS with up to £600m investment, alongside the Wellcome Trust to create a secure and AI-ready health data platform, uniting genomic, diagnostic and clinical data at population scale;
Cutting clinical trial approval times to under 150 days (under the O’Shaughnessy reform);
Pursuing the £520m Life Sciences Innovative Manufacturing Fund, set up in 2024;
Enabling MHRA to become a faster, more agile regulator that gives industry a clearer route to market through parallel approvals with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) alongside a route for medtech international reliance;
Streamlining the route to procurement and using the new Rules Based Pathway to allow innovative medtech to reach patients more quickly; and
Aiming to secure at least one major strategic partnership annually with leading life sciences players, and setting up a support service to help 10-20 high-potential UK companies annually.

Additionally, the overarching strategy promises investment of:

£650m over five years in Genomics England
£354m in the prevention-focused Our Future Health
£30m+ in preclinical infrastructures linked to translational research networks and
£20m in the UK BioBank.
