Medtronic PLC will soon have to halt sales of its CoreValve transcatheter aortic valve replacement systems in Germany following a July 11 ruling that the product infringes on a patent owned by Edwards Lifesciences Corp. A court in Mannheim, Germany, ruled Medtronic’s CoreValve and CoreValve Evolut offerings infringe Edwards’ Spenser patent and granted an injunction prohibiting sale of the devices and a recall of the products. Medtronic would also need to pay damages accounting for past sales under the ruling. The injunction can take effect once Edwards provides the required bond to support it.
