The first of several thousand product liability lawsuits involving DePuy's ASR metal-on-metal hip implants went to trial Jan. 25 in California Superior Court in Los Angeles against a backdrop of gloomy publicity for the Johnson & Johnson subsidiary. Three days before the trial opened, the New York Times published a front page story reporting that a 2011 internal analysis by the firm found that more than a third of the devices would fail within five years after patients received them.
