When the liver fails suddenly, people that seemed healthy enough can progress within days or weeks to coma and death, particularly since the field of liver failure has had no therapeutic alternatives to transplantation, nor effective bridges to transplantation. Arbios Systems Inc. (Waltham, MA), which presented at Medtech Insight’s In3 Medical Device Summit in San Francisco this past June, is working to address this unmet need with liver assist devices that enhance the survival of millions of patients who experience life-threatening episodes of liver failure each year (Figure 1).
