Endoscopic duodenal insert regulates appetite
EndoSphere Inc.’s SatiSphere duodenal insert is designed to fill a niche between permanent, expensive bariatric surgery and diet and exercise. The device is a small, C-shaped nitinol memory wire that incorporates braided spheres, or "speed bumps," along its length. It is delivered endoscopically through the esophagus to the duodenum. The braided structure of the spheres serves to hold food there temporarily, thereby keeping it in contact with nerve receptors for a longer period as it is released from the stomach during digestion. This causes an early feeling of satiety, and extends that feeling between meals.
