The US FDA has granted 510(k) clearance for Calibra Medical's Finesse insulin patch-pen. It is a novel way to deliver the hormone and simplifies mealtime insulin dosing, the Redwood City, California firm claims. The patch measures 5cm long, 2.5cm wide and is 0.6cm thick, and adheres to patients' skin. It can deliver prescribed amounts of insulin over several days, and stays in place when the patient showers or exercises. Conventional syringes and pens are more difficult to use and there is a social stigma attached to injecting insulin at mealtimes, Calibra says. The firm has started a clinical trial of the device in the US.
