A new kidney stone extractor, NGage, has been launched worldwide by its developer, Cook Medical. NGage is made of Nitinol, a shape-memory alloy of nickel and titanium, and is designed to retain its shape following extreme torsion whilst being flexible enough to allow stone manipulation without damaging the renal tissue. It can secure and grip kidney or ureteral stones firmly, and extract and release them easily. Available in diameters of 1.7 French and 2.2 French, the NGage can entrap stone fragments as small as 1mm. A spokesperson for Bloomington, Indiana-based Cook said that the device "went down a storm at the recent annual meeting of the European Association of Urologists", and is now available in the US and the UK. It was CE marked for sale in Europe and cleared for sale in the US in 2007.
