Siemens Medical Solutions and image-guided therapy developer BrainLAB have introduced a surgical technology platform to allow doctors more room in the operating room and help facilitate workflow. The NaviVision system, due for commercial launch in January 2006, combines Siemens' surgical C-arm with BrainLAB's optical 2D/3D navigation unit. NaviVision is the first integrated optical navigation platform to feature automatic recording for surgery supported by an image receptor, the companies said. The system's navigation can be attached directly to the C-arm's workstation or directly to the OR table. Using a touch screen, the surgeon can easily operate the system's monitor and switch between axial and lateral views. The system was introduced as a "work-in-progress" at last month's annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).
