A 73 year old German man has received what is claimed to be the world's smallest, full-energy implantable defibrillator. At just 49 cm3, the single-chamber Medtronic Gem delivers a large enough electric shock to slow the rapidly beating heart. The device should last between 7-10 years when implanted, said Medtronic, the company that developed it.
