Integrated Surgical Systems' (US) computer-controlled surgical robot, Robodoc, has been used to perform 85 hip replacements in German clinical trials. The Californian company told Clinica that US trials with the system are under way at several sites involving 300 hip replacement patients. US approval for the robot will be sought on completion of the trials within the next two years. Invented by the late Dr Howard Paul, a veterinarian, Robodoc was originally used in canine medicine.
