Distalmotion hopes to make robotic surgery less expensive by focusing on the parts of surgery that need the technology the most.
CEO Michael Friedrich told Medtech Insight that Distalmotion was founded in 2013 as a spin-off from the robotics Lab of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland to address the question,“Where do robotics provide true value and how does that fit into a solution that becomes accessible to everyone?” The company's Dexter robotic surgery system is designed specifically for long and complex surgical tasks, especially suturing and dissection
“[Dexter] provides surgeons with dexterity and the ability to articulate instruments and replicate the same dexterity capabilities that they have for open surgery to the minimally invasive surgery space,” he said. “[Also], it provides surgeons with an ergonomic working position compared to standard laparoscopy set-ups where they are exhausted after many hours of surgeries and can also have a severe pain as their career progresses through the years
