Health care providers should use single-use bronchoscopes instead of reprocessed ones when there’s a high risk of infection, the US Food and Drug Administration said in new recommendations issued on 25 June.
The recommendations update a 2015 safety communication on the best practices for decontaminating reprocessed flexible bronchoscopes. At the time, the FDA was fighting a rash of infections and even deaths tied to cross-contamination of bronchoscopes, duodenoscopes, and other reprocessed reusable devices
