Some top hearing aid manufacturers have tried to deter the US Food and Drug Administration from releasing a final rule that would allow hearing aids to be sold over the counter, said Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-MA, and Chuck Grassley, R-IA.
The lawmakers allege the “dominant” hearing aid manufacturers submitted comments to the FDA under the guise of “independent” citizens to undermine the popularity of the agency’s proposed rule, which would allow hearing aids for mild to moderate hearing loss to be sold directly to consumers at retail outlets without a prescription or consultation with an audiologist
