Time is Ripe For Large-Scale German Hospital Reform – Health Ministry

DRGs are not doing what they were conceived to, ambulatory care needs more support and health care delivery across the country must be unburdened from bureaucracy, health minister Karl Lauterbach told the German hospital congress meeting during Medica 2022.

Health minister Karl Lauterbach was at pains to emphasize "collaboration" on several occasions during his keynote speech to the 45th annual Deutscher Krankenhaustag (DKT), which was held at Medica (14-17 November 2022). Ongoing hospital reform initiatives will require a joint effort from all stakeholders. It will not be a fait accompli authored by the government and a handful of scientific experts, he stressed.

The forthcoming large-scale structural health reform will tackle diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) and will push for increased access to ambulatory care. The final decisions will be the product of a four-stage consultation, the minister told the DKT gathering
