General Mills' Benefit psyllium cereal

Package labeling changed to focus on ingredients in cold cereal such as oat bran and psyllium as part of a "heart healthy diet" and not on health claims to reduce cholesterol. General Mills said some consumers were "confused" by "reduces cholesterol" claim into thinking product now had less cholesterol when, in fact, it contains none. Label changes were not a result of FDA scrutiny of cereals with psyllium ("The Pink Sheet" Oct. 2, T&G-12), a spokesperson said. Company is very close to filing a GRAS petition with the agency on psyllium. Redesigned boxes are slated to be on shelves in two to three months. Product is available in one-third of U.S., mainly in Midwest.
