MERCK COZAAR ACTIVE INGREDIENT IS BEING IMPORTED due to current U.S. drug export law, Merck Senior VP-Manufacturing Michael King testified at a Senate Labor & Human Resources/Aging Subcommittee hearing on drug and device export reform July 13. "Because of the requirements of the [1986] Drug Export Act, we ultimately decided to locate production of the final bulk active drug substance overseas," King testified. "This decision allowed us to get the product to foreign consumers at the time of its foreign approval." As a result, "the active ingredient of Cozaar, an invention of a U.S. company, manufactured by a U.S. company, is now a U.S. import."
