Diabetes drugmaker Novo Nordisk AS has been under public scruitny of late after it revealed that it has hired the queen of fatty foods, Paula Deen, to endorse its GLP-1 type 2 diabetes drug Victoza (liraglutide). Deen – who is famous for her cooking shows on the Food Network that promote high fat, high sugar, fried foods – has joined her two sons, who also are chefs, in promoting Novo’s “Diabetes In A New Light” campaign for an undisclosed sum. Deen revealed last week that she has been living with diabetes for the last three years; the timing corresponds with her son Bobby’s new show, called “Not My Mama’s Cooking,” that tries to “healthify” Deen’s traditional Southern recipes. Both the company and Deen have been highly criticized for the alliance, with many critics pointing out that Deen is not the ideal role model of a diabetic lifestyle. Deen has made it clear to the press that she has no plans to divert from the comfort foods that have made her famous.
