Consumer Reports February issue says all 13 calcium carbonate supplements tested for lead met the California Prop 65 level of 4 mcg lead/1,000 mg calcium. However, only six met the more stringent 1.5 mcg limit that goes into effect in April. The supplements found to contain less than 1 mcg lead were: Tums Antacid/Calcium Supplement Regular Strength, Tums 500, AARP Formula 314, AARP Formula 564 with Vitamin D, Walgreens Pharmaceutical Grade and Your Life Natural Source. Those containing 2-3 mcg lead were: Rolaids Antacid, American Fare Vita Smart (Kmart), Vita-Smart Natural Oyster Shell (Kmart), CVS Natural Oyster Shell, Rite Aid USP 600 mg, Thrifty Payless Calcium 600 and Your Life Natural Oyster Shell. The Vita-Smart and Thrifty Payless products have since been reformulated, Consumer Reports notes.
