FDA proposes Food Safety Modernization Act-mandated eligibility requirements and procedures for accrediting third-party auditors to inspect food safety at foreign facilities, including firms in the dietary supplement supply chain, and a “flexible, risk-based approach to foreign supplier verification” program for importers. The proposals, both prepared for publication July 29 in the Federal Register, “will help to meet the challenges of our complex global food supply system. Our success will depend in large part on partnerships across nations, industries, and business sectors,” FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said. The third-party auditors proposed rule includes monitoring, oversight and notification requirements for auditors and should “increase efficiency and reduce cost, by eliminating redundant auditing to assess foreign suppliers’ compliance” with food safety requirements, FDA says.
