US and Bahrain sign FTA

The US and Bahrain have signed a free trade agreement (FTA), bringing the US's intention of creating a Middle East free trade area a step closer to fruition1,2. The FTA, which is the first signed between the US and a Persian Gulf partner3, is intended to expand opportunities for trade between the two countries; the revenue from this trade stood at nearly US$900 million in 2003, with US exports to Bahrain, including pharmaceuticals, totalling US$558 million.
