Lonza acquires Capsugel for $5.5bn cash, nearly twice as much as private equity firm KKR paid Pfizer for it, to enhance its product development and expand the market for its contract development and manufacturing services for drug and nutritional products.

Lonza Group AG offers a good fit for Capsugelto continue the delivery format innovation it flexed in five years as an independent firm after 50 years of comparatively stifled operations under ownership by pharmaceutical manufacturers.

As the dominant supplier of hard capsules for Rx and OTC drugs, Capsugel provided its previous corporate parents a steady revenue source if not a dynamic platform for offering additional delivery formats. The Morristown, N.J
