The Body Shop: Four mil. consumers sign non-animal testing petition requesting that the European Union "end the cruel and unnecessary use of animals in cosmetics testing by imposing the proposed Jan. 1, 1998 ban," the company said. The petition states that The Body Shop and the undersigned "believe cosmetics and toiletry testing on animals to be morally and scientifically unjustifiable" and that "sufficient safe ingredients are available for use in cosmetics products without further animal testing." The petition argues that "the cosmetics industry will develop alternative tests faster when forbidden from using new animal tested ingredients and products."
