In Brief: Coty Eyes OPI Growth; RevitaLash Is Back; Garnier Pulled From China

Coty aims to drive development of its OPI nail brand in the U.K. with the acquisition of distributor Lena White. More news in brief.

N.Y.-based [Coty Inc.] announced Jan. 6 that it will acquire Lena White Ltd., the biggest international distributor of its OPI nail brand, in order to drive development of the brand in the U.K., its second-largest market. “This acquisition is an important step in strengthening OPI's position in Europe,” said Michele Scannavini, CEO of Coty. “The OPI strategy remains focused on the salon professional and prestige channels, and we expect to accelerate its growth in the international markets by leveraging our investments in both areas.” Lena White has distributed OPI in retail and professional channels in the U.K. for the past 30 years, providing the sector with promotional, merchandising, educational and sales support, Coty notes.

Following a long legal battle, Ventura, Calif.-based Athena Cosmetics Inc. has resumed sale of RevitaLash Advanced Eyelash Conditioner in the U.S., according to a Jan. 6 release. In March 2013, a California district court ordered the firm to halt sale and marketing of the product in the U.S. following a civil lawsuit brought forth by Allergan, which makes prescription eyelash enhancer Latisse. Allergan alleged that Athena’s non-FDA-approved eyelash growth product was marketed unfairly, and the district court agreed Also see "In Brief" - HBW Insight, 11 March, 2013. However, Athena appealed the decision to a federal appeals court, which ruled that the district court overstepped its bounds by prohibiting sales beyond the state of California, as the original injunction was based specifically on violation of California law
