Essential Oil Producers Making Progress Toward REACH 2018 Deadline

The European Commission, European Chemicals Agency and International Fragrance Association have been working to help essential-oil producers meet obligations under REACH, with a May 31, 2018 registration deadline approaching for chemicals produced or imported in volumes as low as 1 ton. A recent roundtable explored “practical solutions” to assist producers with challenges, but many growers maintain that essential oils should not be regulated as chemicals.

The May 31, 2018 deadline for low-volume manufacturers and importers of chemicals under European REACH law imposes registration requirements on many small businesses for the first time, including essential-oil producers, which face unique challenges due to the nature of their offerings.
