N.Y. City Salon Crusade Includes Investigation Into Nail-Care Chemicals

New York's Department of Consumer Affairs, which is heading up a large-scale initiative to address reported labor exploitation and health risks in nail salons, has issued a letter to FDA seeking a ban on toluene, formaldehyde and dibutyl phthalate in nail products and intends to investigate manufacturers making "environmental and product claims that may not be valid."

New York City's large-scale advocacy and educational initiative to address labor and health issues in nail salons – covered in a recent investigative series by The New York Times – will include a probe into nail-care chemicals, with a letter already dispatched to FDA calling for a ban on the "toxic trio."

Announced by Mayor Bill de Blasio May 15, the campaign is being led by New York's Department of Consumer Affairs, in collaboration with other city government offices, to provide nail salon employees with information
