CIR Panel Affirms Nonoxynol Safety, Upholding Earlier Conclusion

Cosmetic Ingredient Review experts made final a delayed safety assessment on nonoxynols at their last meeting of 2015, determining the ingredients – including nonoxynol-9, singled out by Women’s Voices for the Earth as particularly concerning – safe as used in cosmetic products when formulated to be non-irritating. The panel issued six final safety assessments in total and advanced six tentative reports.

At its December 14-15 meeting in Washington, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel issued a final assessment on the safety of nonoxynols, without a caveat regarding nonoxynol-9's use in feminine-care washes recommended by NGO Women's Voices for the Earth.
