President’s Request Boosts Food Safety Budget, Proposes Separate Agency

In the White House budget document, FDA requests a $4.9 billion appropriation for fiscal 2016, up about $425 million from its budget for fiscal 2015. The $1.45 billion requested for food safety includes $109.4 million for implementing regulations developed over the past three years under FSMA

The Obama administration wants to have its food safety cake and eat it too in the fiscal 2016 budget, requesting a $424.8 million boost for FDA’s dietary supplement and food industry oversight and proposing a separate agency focused on protecting the food supply.
