French Consumers Facing Higher Prices And Greater Barriers To Purchasing OTCs

Efforts by France to improve consumers' access to OTC medicines has fallen well short of expectations, says consumer group Familles Rurales. On average, prices are higher and vary significantly from one pharmacy to the next. Furthermore, OTCs which should be available for self-selection remain behind the counter.

France’s ‘free access’ scheme to make certain OTC medicines more accessible to consumers at lower prices is failing to live up to its billing, says consumer interest group Familles Rurales.

Noting that the main goals of the scheme when it was introduced in 2008 were to offer competitive prices for OTCs and to improve the purchasing power of citizens, Familles Rurales said 10 years on prices
