Congressional Research Suggests Additional Layer Of Complexity In FDA’s Cannabinoid Puzzle

Congressional Research Service report says in addition to markets for hemp from fiber, seeds and flowers, “a separate, marketable category exists for the plant’s extracted compounds.” Ingredients from hemp seeds and grains as well as from flowers are alternative protein sources in supplements, foods and beverages and dairy alternatives.

The US Food and Drug Administration’s conundrum over making lawful the use of hemp-derived ingredients in non-drug products might seem even more perplexing with a congressional report identifying additional uses for the substances.

It also would establish regulatory structure for using cannabinoids found naturally in hemp and allowing “semi-synthetic” ingredients while prohibiting artificial or fully synthetic cannabinoids.
