California DTSC Was ‘Unaware’ Of 40+ Hazardous Chemicals In Nail Care That May Get Closer Looks

The relatively small number of stakeholders who responded to DTSC’s information call-in revealed that the vast majority of nail products likely contain Candidate Chemicals on California DTSC’s authoritative lists. The department will continue to evaluate CCs in nail care for potential regulation by the Safer Consumer Products program.

The vast majority of nail product formulations reported to California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control in 2020 contained at least one Candidate Chemical (CC) from the authoritative lists that undergird the state’s Safer Consumer Products (SCP) program.

In total, manufacturers that participated in the DTSC’s information call-in revealed the presence of 97 CCs in their formulations, including 75 that the department previously was “unaware of” as nail-care ingredients, contaminants or residuals, according to its 17 April
