Boehringer Ingelheim Japan Files Spiriva Application For Asthma

Boehringer Ingelheim Japan filed an application Jan. 6 for the approval of its long-acting anticholinergic Spiriva (tiotropium), currently used for the treatment of COPD, for the use in the treatment of asthma.

Boehringer Ingelheim Japan filed an application Jan. 6 for the approval of its long-acting anticholinergic Spiriva (tiotropium), currently used for the treatment of COPD, for the use in the treatment of asthma. With inhaled steroids and long-acting β2 stimulants not being sufficient for 40% of asthma patients, BI believes Spiriva can offer benefits to adult patients as a new choice of treatment. The application was based worldwide Phase 3 trials involving over 4,000 patients which showed improved lung functions and bronchodilator effects lasting 24 hours.
