Alzheimer's disease is a ruthless disorder that steals people's memories, their ability to process information and eventually, even their personalities. Some 2% of people living in industrialized nations currently suffer from this neurodegenerative disorder, and the incidence is expected to triple within 50 years. In the US, some 4 million people presently have the disease. The severe toll it exacts—for people afflicted by it as well as their caregivers—makes Alzheimer's one of the most hotly pursued areas of neurological research.
