The UK Fertilisation and Embryology Authority has announced that fertility clinics can now screen embryos for genes that could increase the risk of a person developing one of a number of cancers. This represents a broadening of the criteria for using pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), which has previously been allowed only for serious, early-onset inherited childhood conditions such as Huntingdon's disease and cystic fibrosis.
