Pharma Could Do Better With Data, Say IBM, McLaren

The great and good of the pharmaceutical industry have again been speaking about the big opportunities that big data provides, but senior executives from IBM Watson Health and Formula 1 giant McLaren believe the sector should be doing more.

A sizeable chunk of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations’ annual conference in Brussels was dedicated to discussing the volumes of data being produced and what can be done with it. Stefan Oschmann, chief executive at Merck KGAA and newly-appointed EFPIA president, noted that the advances in digital technology as well as big data “will help us to unlock tomorrow’s cures across Europe”. However, senior executives in attendance from IBM Watson Health and McLaren Applied Technologies said the pharma industry needs to do more.
