One-third of the world’s population is at risk of contracting typhoid fever while between 11m and 20m people fall sick globally from the illness each year in regions where water and sanitation quality is poor. Typhoid, whose symptoms include fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea, claims between 128,000 and 161,000 lives annually, mainly in South Asia, South East Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, the World Health Organization says.
