Bharat Biotech Gets WHO Nod For ‘Game-Changer’ Typhoid Vaccine

India’s Bharat Biotech has won WHO pre-qualification for a vaccine against typhoid fever that experts say will be a “game-changer” in preventing the bacterial disease, especially among children under two years - the age group most at risk.

One-third of the world’s population is at risk of contracting typhoid fever while between 11m and 20m people fall sick globally from the illness each year in regions where water and sanitation quality is poor. Typhoid, whose symptoms include fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea, claims between 128,000 and 161,000 lives annually, mainly in South Asia, South East Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, the World Health Organization says.
