Vertex has suffered a serious blow to its plans to build beyond its cystic fibrosis franchise, with the failure of pipeline drug VX-814.

The novel drug was in Phase II development for the rare condition alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD), but will now be abandoned on safety grounds after elevated liver enzymes were observed...
