UK’s ‘Pioneering’ Medicines Repurposing Program Delivers First License

Now that the first license for a drug has been obtained in partnership with the program, work will begin to ensure other companies that make the product adopt the new licensed indication.

Anastrozole is to be funded in the UK for use as a preventive treatment for breast cancer after becoming the first product to be repurposed via a multi-agency program that was set up in 2021 to look at using existing medicines in new ways.

It is hoped that the move could help prevent around 2,000 cases of breast cancer in England.
