In The US, Where Black Inequity Has Become A Focus, Companies Compete For Talent

In the United States, where Black inequity has become a focus of diversity efforts, biopharma companies are working hard to recruit and retain individuals from these communities. In fact, the search for such employees and leaders has become so competitive that competition for diverse talent within the industry is now "fierce," as one executive told In Vivo.

Black inequity in the US biopharma industry is striking. The most recent US Census indicated 12.1% of the American population are Black, but according to a 2021 Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) survey of roughly 30 pharma and biotech companies, most of whom are based in the US, Black employees account for only 6% of their workforce and fill only 3% of their executive positions.
