German medtech and health care are going through a period of unprecedented change and modernization, with hospital reform on the agenda and integration of digitized functionality happening across the sector. The EU Medical Device Regulation casts a long shadow over the medtech industry and will result in a shake out among companies and products, as In Vivo learnt at Medica 2023.

Digital prescriptions on smart phones had a soft roll out in Germany in July 2023 and since 1 January 2024 have been a standard offering at all pharmacies. The public can now access prescribed medication via a smartphone app, the gematik electronic Health Card (eGK) or may still use the paper option.

Local media reported teething troubles among community doctors struggling to master and integrate e-prescriptions into already full working days. Nevertheless, increased digital health care integration is a top priority for Germany’s health minister, Karl Lauterbach
