Absorbing Debate: Boston Sci, Abbott Differ On Whether The Future Of Stents Is To Disappear

Competing visions of the future of percutaneous coronary interventions were on display at TCT year, with Boston Scientific pushing its Synergy bioabsorbable polymer-coated, drug-eluting metal stent platform as the better long-term option to fully-resorbable scaffolds of the type Abbott is first out of the gate with.

Stents and scaffolds that could become the new standard tools for cath labs in the next several years were on display at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics conference in San Francisco earlier this month, but questions about the long-term effectiveness and economics of the devices were also prominent at the annual interventional cardiology meeting.

Boston Scientific Corp. and Abbott Laboratories Inc. came into TCT with somewhat competing messages about the future of percutaneous coronary interventions.
