What are Bunions?

Bunions, or hallux valgus, are characterized by the gradual deformation of the metatarsophalangeal joint – by the big toe – and cause difficulties walking as well as falls for elderly patients.

They develop over a patient’s lifetime, so they mostly affect elderly patients, but approximately a quarter of all adults have one. Women are also more commonly afflicted – 30% versus 13% for men.
