South East Asia Steps Up Fight Against TB

South East Asia is gearing for additional momentum in the fight against TB, a disease that caused nearly 800,000 deaths in the region in 2015. Increased budgetary outlays, a regional “Innovation to Implementation” fund and the need for high impact interventions were among the key issues brought up at a recent ministerial meeting in India.

Health ministers from South East Asia and the World Health Organization have signed a Call for Action for Ending TB, undertaking to accelerate efforts and execute “adequately” financed, innovative, multi-sectoral measures to achieve the global target to wipe out TB by 2030.

The Call for Action underscores the need for enhanced government and partner budgetary allocations to enable national TB plans to be fully financed; health ministers have concurred to lead the implementation of the national TB response through an empowered body reporting to the “highest
