There is no evidence that a US government shutdown is eminent yet, but plans already are in place to furlough nearly half of FDA's workforce should Congress not extend appropriations beyond the end of the month.
Because of user fee funding, FDA would be able to keep a much larger portion of its staff working than other agencies within HHS, but still would have to lay off 7,654 people in the event the government shuts down, according to the FY 2017
