Viability Of Preservative MI Use Remains Unclear; CIR Tables Review

CIR may take counter position to Europe in determining that preservative methylisothiazolinone can safely be used in leave-on personal care products, panel members suggested during March 17-18 meeting in Washington D.C. Review of the ingredient is tabled until the panel receives new sensitization data.

Contrary to movement in Europe, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel may find that preservative methylisothiazolinone (MI or MIT) can be used safely in leave-on personal-care products, as well as rinse-off items, but the practical implications for formulators of moisturizers and other products that are not washed off remain in question.
