Attn. Europe: CIR Identifies Safe Limit For Preservative MI In Leave-Ons

CIR’s Expert Panel recommends a limit of 4 ppm for preservative methylisothiazolinone in leave-on cosmetic products and 100 ppm in rinse-off formulas at a June 9-10 meeting in Washington, drawing from QRA data supplied by Cosmetics Europe. While CIR is still reviewing the Quantitative Risk Assessment for MI in various product categories, the panel decided to issue an assessment now, as the regulatory fate of the ingredient hangs in the balance in the EU.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel has identified a safe limit for cosmetic preservative methylisothiazolinone (MI) in leave-on cosmetic products that it hopes will send a signal to European regulators that the ingredient can be safely combined with methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI) for effective preservative action.
