More Problems With Lead In Supplements: Health And Wellness Industry News Roundup

Another recall by Chicago firm Ton Shen Health; Mannatech rides Asia-Pacific growth; and more news in brief.

For the second time in three months Chicago firm Ton Shen Health is recalling a supplement product due to elevated levels of lead above the acceptable level for children. FDA said in a Nov. 7 consumer advisory that the firm's Life Rising brand "Side Head Regulator TT" tablets tested positive for elevated lead levels and the firm, due to the possibility of use by children, is recalling the product. The recalled tablets, distributed in a 1.6-ounce white plastic package, mostly were sold locally in Chicago area retail stores, though some were distributed to other states through mail orders. The firm in August recalled its Life Rising DHZC-2 supplement and FDA, state and local officials investigated two deaths potentially linked to use of the product. FDA also in 2016 has investigated lead poisoning linked to Bentonite Me Baby medicinal clay made by Alikay Naturals after receiving an advisory from Minnesota officials. ([A#PS108142])

Nutritional supplement direct seller [Mannatech Inc.]'s third-quarter net income reached $1.3m, 46 cents per diluted share, with operations outside of the Americas accounting for approximately 60.5% of its consolidated net sales. The Coppell, Texas-based firm 's Nov. 8 earnings release stated that operating expenses were more than $4m higher than in the year-ago period, when it also incurred more than $2.1m in other expenses as its net income was reported at $68,000. Net sales for the July-September period grew 9.8% to $48.1m with Asia/Pacific net sales up 15.9% to $25.5m. Mannatech said product launches and promotions increased Asia/Pacific net sales by $2.9m and its loyalty program spurred a $400,000 increase
