FDA Supplement Office Late, Tighter Regulation Overdue – Durbin, Blumenthal

No member of Congress objects to FDA establishing an Office of Dietary Supplement Programs, but Sens. Blumenthal and Durbin plan to introduce legislation for stronger oversight of the industry. FDA says the office will raise the profile of supplement market enforcement within the agency.

Elevating FDA's dietary supplement division to an office only shows that stronger enforcement is needed, say Sens. Richard Durbin and Richard Blumenthal, steadfast critics of the agency's oversight of the industry.

FDA on Dec. 21 announced that after 30 days without objections from Congress to a Department of Health and Human Services proposal, the agency moved its dietary supplement programs out of the Office of Nutrition Labeling and Dietary Supplements and established it as the Office of Dietary Supplement Programs
