US FDA Pushing For Cosmetics Industry Cooperation On Allergens, Other Priorities

The FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition has a wish list for cosmetics reform legislation, but with Congress currently focused elsewhere, the agency is using its existing authority and resources to address cosmetics safety priorities while working to drive voluntary industry support.

Allergens in cosmetic products remains a key priority for the US Food and Drug Administration and an example of an area where the agency seeks increased industry cooperation in the absence of updated regulations.

In her 11 May presentation at the Personal Care Products Council’s 2021 Virtual Summit, Susan Mayne, director of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, said the agency is holding discussions with trade groups regarding allergens in cosmetics and plans to interview
