When AstraZeneca plc decided three years ago to relocate its R&D headquarters from its Alderley Park campus in the Northwest of England to be nearer the biotech action around Cambridge, a research park built to accommodate thousands of scientists suddenly faced the prospect of becoming a ghost town.
