The Baltimore university relies on an extensive infrastructure for tech transfer, and has a high volume of output to show for it. Recent tech transfer deals include Spark, Spotlight, Achilles, Biohaven, Cantabio and Renova, Zucara and Heat Biologics.

A prolific partner for industry tapping into academic research, Johns Hopkins University has benefited from having a coordinated structure for deal-making that offers incubation and mentoring for its start-ups, according to Neil Veloso, executive director of tech transfer at the university.

The Baltimore-based university launched 22 start-up companies in 2015 and that activity took place within the context of more than 162 license, option or other agreements around intellectual property derived...
